We are a group of high school volunteers in Ridgewood who provide complementary math tutoring for elementary schoolers. We figured that some students may need some extra help in math, especially due to the sudden transition to virtual learning. To start, we want to work only with those who need extra help to keep up with their current or previous grade level curriculum. This is NOT for competitive math or advanced preparation.
"We have had a wonderful experience with our tutor so far. She is very patient and good."
"We are extremely grateful to Helping Hands for the time they gave to our 3rd grade daughter this past spring. As a math tutor, our tutor was incredibly pleasant and instructive for Georgia to work with. Our tutor demonstrated professionalism and a keen ability to teach math concepts that could have been challenging to convey online. We would highly recommend our tutor and Helping Hands to other parents."
"The sessions are going great so far! I love our tutor- she is very patient and encouraging. My 6 year old entering 2nd grade loves the math games and loves the idea of an older student teacher her."
"Our son had a math test on the lesson he was having trouble with and that he worked on with a tutor. He got 100%!! His very first 100%!! He was so excited!"

Essentially, at the high school, students are given the opportunity to join open meets with their teachers after school to ask one or multiple questions they have related to a certain topic. Inspired by that, Helping Hands will be hosting Office Hours which serves as an open meet for elementary students to join to ask for math help. We will have a specific Zoom for each school with assigned high school tutors on the call. When your child enters the Zoom, they will be placed in a breakout room with a tutor who can help them with any troubles they are having with their math homework or classwork. All students are welcome to join multiple days a week from Mon-Thurs for recurring math help from tutors throughout. If they come regularly at a scheduled time, we can make sure to keep them with the same tutor every session.
As of now, we do not tutor in any subjects other than math.
Each student will go into a breakout room if they need help with multiple questions or for understanding their work. If your child is in need of one on one tutoring, s/he can definitely schedule something with one of our volunteers. Otherwise, we have our zoom links open from 4-6 pm each week, Mondays through Thursdays, and your child can pop on whenever s/he wants.
Hopefully, that will not happen, but in this case, we will reschedule or try to bring on another tutor. We can also place multiple students with the same tutor, almost like a study pod. This, of course, will be determined by grade level.
We are all volunteers, so there is absolutely no cost at all!
There is a registration form on our website and it should also have been sent out by your child’s principal. Just fill that out, and based on the schedule that you chose, we will reach out to you soon!
There is no limit. Your child can pop in as often as he/she wants, everyday or even once a week! We are here to meet your child's needs, and we are very flexible.
